The Global Opportunities Fair was a brainchild of Amy Lester, International Business Program Coordinator and Dr. Emira Ibrahimpasic, Assistant Professor of Practice and Assistant Director of Global Studies Program. The Fair was first hosted during UNL's International Education Week in 2018. The goal of the fair was to bring together employers, non-profit organizations, and educational programs interested in recruiting and engaging with students who are globally minded learners and leaders. Recognizing the importance of a partnership between two majors with closely aligned missions and goals, Ms. Lester and Dr. Ibrahimpasic chose to make the Fair an annual event.
Despite the snow flurries and unusually cold temperatures, the Global Opportunities Fair highlighted 10 employers, 5 non-profit organizations and 3 educational programs with the specific mission of engaging with students who place global issues at the center of their education, and whose skill set includes cross-cultural competency, speaking foreign languages and a desire to live and work abroad. Over a hundred students made their way through the fair, stopping at booths to chat and get more information on employment opportunities with Sandhills Global and ReSource Pro, volunteer opportunities with Lutheran Family Services, Asian Cultural and Community Center, and Lincoln Literacy, and connecting with Dr. Damuth of the UNL’s Fellowship Office and Mr. Kyle Cox with the Boren Awards under the Institute of International Education. The diversity of employers, local non-profit organizations, national educational organizations, and on-campus resources meant that students could identify potential experiences while in college and those they could pursue after graduation. The Fair also brought together faculty who design and lead study abroad trips.
Global Opportunities 2020 is already in the planning stages with the hope to expand the program to include further campus and community partners and to continue to collaborate and share best practices across our institution as well as our community.
